The question guiding my sustained investigations was: How can the use of composite imagery, color, and contrast be used in a contemporary retelling of the Great Gatsby? At times, I used black and white photographs to effectively convey the mood of certain scenes. I implemented the elements of art—specifically contrast—and carefully considering composition in working with the composite imagery of the environments and figurative silhouettes throughout many of my pieces to create a narrative style. While my process has evolved quite a bit, I now am not focusing on color as a whole for the body of works but instead am doing a mixture of black and white and color. Some pieces in the story seem to fit better with black and white, giving a somber or tragic feel to the piece, which better represents the event in the story, whereas other pieces display it better in color. Individual pieces may have an emphasis on color but the same does not go for the entire portfolio. I also have focused greatly on composition and detail when it comes to placement of the silhouettes in the image and also to work on making all the pieces fit together as one whole story rather than 15 individual images.
